Electronic I-9 & E-Verify

The I-9 form verifies that individuals are legally eligible to work in the United States. The U.S. government requires employers to keep a copy of the form on file for every employee. It must be properly completed within 72 hours of employment but often it’s filled out incorrectly, which can cause problems if a company is audited by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Employers may be fined up to $1,100 for each employee whose I-9 form is not completed correctly. What’s more, in the past two years ICE has been aggressively pursuing those who sidestep the rules.
